The CMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) began in 2026 and serves as an independent voice for all CMU faculty.

We bring together Carnegie Mellon University faculty from all schools and ranks to advocate for academic freedom and democratic faculty governance and address existential challenges to knowledge creation, research funding, academic integrity, and teaching. We welcome all current faculty members at Carnegie Mellon University to join us.

Our Objectives

• Defend the academic freedom and professional status of all faculty at Carnegie Mellon University and throughout academe
• Create an independent space for faculty to engage critically with the university and to amplify faculty voices
• Encourage a greater role for meaningful faculty governance at Carnegie Mellon University
• Address existential challenges to knowledge creation, scholarship, creative activity, research funding, academic integrity, and teaching at Carnegie Mellon University
• Facilitate cooperation with faculty at other colleges and universities on issues of mutual importance and support faculty at less secure institutions in their efforts to continue their work without fear or threat of retaliation
• Inform the academic community about AAUP standards and policy statements, and facilitate the dissemination of information on higher education principles and practices
