We came together to create this chapter because academia is in a moment of existential crisis and the only way we can solve the multitude of problems we face is to act collectively. Individual action will not defend us from politically motivated attacks, ensure that our salaries keep up with the cost of living, protect research funding, prevent generative AI from undermining teaching, learning, and knowledge creation, or ensure freedom of expression on campus.
We welcome all current faculty members at Carnegie Mellon University to join us. Faculty is defined broadly as anyone who is contracted by the university to undertake teaching or research at a professional level. This includes tenure-track, non-tenure track, and adjunct faculty; full-time and part-time faculty; librarians, archivists, curators; technicians whose work involves or substantially contributes to research or teaching; and postdoctoral fellows.
